NASPA AVP Symposium
In-Person Conferences Supporting the Profession AVP or "Number Two"
January 22 - January 24, 2022 Ponte Vedra Beach, FL
The NASPA AVP Symposium is a unique and innovative three-day program designed to support and develop AVPs and other "number twos" in their unique campus leadership roles. Leveraging the vast expertise and knowledge of sitting AVPs, the Symposium will provide high-level content through a variety of participant engagement-oriented session types.
This professional development offering is limited to AVPs and other "number twos" who report to the highest-ranking student affairs officer on campus and have substantial responsibility for divisional functions. Additionally, vice presidents for student affairs (and the equivalent) who are presenting during the symposium may also register at a discounted rate and attend.

About
Assistant and associate vice presidents for student affairs and other senior-level "number twos" who report to the vice president for student affairs (or the equivalent) have among the most complex and challenging roles in the modern student affairs division. The NASPA AVP Symposium will gather AVPs from a wide variety of institutional types for three intense days of learning and networking designed to support AVPs' success in these difficult, yet critically important, roles. Symposium attendees can expect sessions and high-level content developed and delivered for an AVP audience that call on AVP participants to contribute to the peer learning community by deeply engaging with the Symposium content and fellow participants.
The theme of the 2022 symposium is "The AVP in 2022: Refreshed. Renewed. Refocused." We expect that programs and sessions will connect with the following topics and content areas:
- Diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice
- Community health and well-being
- Post-pandemic innovations to advance student engagement
- Flourishing in the AVP role
- Freedom of expression and civility on campus
- Leveraging personal identities for effective leadership
- Leading diverse intergenerational teams
- Human resources (including supervision and staff accountability)
- Law, public policy, and compliance issues
- Understanding, navigating, and influencing institutional culture
- Organizational change and resource management
- Innovating in a context of diminishing resources
- Strategies for addressing the challenges and complexities inherent in the AVP role
Schedule
The symposium will begin at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2022 and will conclude at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, January 24, 2022. Additionally, several pre- and post-symposium workshops will be offered for an additional fee. Please note: the schedule is subject to change based on presenter availability.

AVPs at the Intersection: Free Speech, Mental Health, and Inclusive Communities
PRE-symposium Workshop | Saturday, January 22, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. | Additional registration required
AVPs often find themselves at the intersection of competing values on the higher education landscape. During this pre-symposium workshop, participants will explore the realities of navigating the priorities of free speech, student mental health, and creation of inclusive communities. Based on current literature, participants will explore the tensions that exist among these important topics including through a real world case study designed to identify gaps in practice and develop strategies for leading campus efforts to address future concerns.
Spheres of Influence: Leading Inclusively by Design
POST-symposium Workshop, Monday, January 24, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. | Additional registration required
The nature of the AVP or #2 role is undoubtedly unique and requires specific skills and the ability to work effectively and collaboratively across the entire institution. While this role comes with particular responsibilities, it also provides meaningful opportunities to exert influence and leadership at all levels, internally and externally to student affairs. At a time when higher ed institutions are continuing to experience and respond to great challenges, AVPs need to work intentionally to shape how they lead and exercise their influence. This session will provide a chance for participants to learn about a new "Inclusion by Design" blueprint for leading Self, Others, Organization and Community. In addition to identifying spheres of influence and exploring strategies for engaging others intentionally, there will be time for self-reflection and peer sharing. Symposium featured speaker, Angela Batista, will guide attendees to choose a strategic area of focus, identify barriers, and outline immediate next steps.
