The NASPA Campus Safety and Violence Prevention Knowledge Community recognizes outstanding contributions in two ways: Individual / Group Awards and Best Practices Awards.

Categories

Best Practice categories include:

  • Best Practices in Campus Safety: General
    Recognizes any general program or practice that enhances campus safety.
  • Best Practices in Preparation Activities
    Includes identifying campus stakeholders, completing assessment of potential crisis, and preparation (any program or practice that prepares a campus to successfully prepare for a safety or crisis issue in advance).
  • Best Practice in Prevention Activities 
    Includes both passive and active education about campus resources, procedures, and protocols regarding institutional approach to threats, threat assessment, and threat management (any program or practice that prepares a campus to successfully avoid or minimize a safety or crisis issue). 
  • Best Practices in Response Activities 
    Examples include immediate staff response, psychological response, facility response, and protocol implementation* (any response by a campus to an actual safety issue or crisis as it occurred including short term follow up).
  • Best Practices in Recovery Activities
    Examples include long term grief outreach and care, facility repair and recovery, and documentation for future planning and reference (any long term response by a campus to an actual safety issue or crisis that occurred). 
  • Best Practices in Educational Activities 
    Any program that educates a campus community or stakeholders on campus safety.
  • Best Practices in Environmental Health and Safety
    Any program or practice related to Environmental Health and Safety.
  • Best Practices in College Health
    Any program or practice related to College health issues.
  • Best Practices in Collaboration
    Any successful campus collaboration related to safety or crisis response.
  • Best Practices in Safety: General Non-Collegiate Category
    Submissions by those other than universities such as non-profits, companies, etcetera. The Campus Safety and Violence Prevention Knowledge Community Awards and Recognition Committee and select experts in the field of Campus Safety will evaluate submissions and select winners.

Nomination Information

The nominator must be a NASPA member. The nomination should be submitted electronically via the submission from by the advertised due date. Submissions should not exceed 10 pages to include supplemental material.  Please provide the following information: 

  1. Name of program
  2. Location
  3. Submitter’s name, contact information, and NASPA number
  4. Brief statement of the program (less than 100 words)
  5. Best Practice category for which the program qualifies
  6. History of the program
  7. Purpose
  8. How it works
  9. Collaboration partners
  10. Alignment with current best practices/grounding in literature/framework
  11. Assessment results
  12. Sustainability of the program
  13. Lessons learned
  14. Advice for those who might wish to adopt/adapt the program
  15. Websites/other information that showcases the program
