The Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice (JSARP) is planning a special issue for July 2024 that will feature articles on the theme of The Future of Student Affairs Practice. The purpose of this special issue is to inspire freedom dreaming (Tourmaline, 2020) as it relates to the Scholarship of Practice (SoP) and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). For student affairs research and practice, freedom dreaming requires a critical eye towards what aspects of our current practices and research agendas are worth keeping and which ones require reconsideration. With the current socio-political climate, there is an urgent need to access, integrate, and apply multiple sources of knowledge to move student affairs practice forward (Hirschy & Wilson, 2017, p. 91).

This special issue will prioritize submissions authored by student affairs practitioners and collaborations between practitioners, graduate students, faculty, and/or researchers.

Topics for the special issue could include, but are not limited to:

  • Innovative pedagogical practices derived through research aimed at improving the preparation of student affairs educators
  • Innovative programmatic practices or policies derived through research aimed at improving the experiences of college students
  • Socio-political trends, challenges, and opportunities impacting student affairs research or practice
  • Collaborative efforts between student affairs graduate preparation programs and divisions of student affairs in conducting research and/or preparation for practice

Abstracts should be limited to 500 words and describe the proposed article and which category of publication it best matches:

  • Innovations in Research and Scholarship
  • International Features
  • Innovations in Practice
  • Media Features and Reviews

In your abstract, please include the following information:

  • Manuscript purpose and/or research question(s)
  • Methodology (theoretical framework, data source, participants, analytic techniques)
  • Significant findings
  • Relevance to student affairs research and/or practice
