Post-Conference Reflections from Our 2024 Jim Rhatigan Recipients: Xavien Johns

NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP) New Professionals and Graduate Students Graduate New Professional
February 25, 2025 Xavien Johns Florida State University

Attending the 2024 NASPA Annual Conference as a Jim Rhatigan Fellow has been an incredibly transformative experience. This fellowship has provided me with the opportunity to participate in this prestigious event and enhanced my overall conference experience in profound ways.

For starters, with the help of the fellowship, this was the first time I attended the Black and African American Men Summit pre-conference. This impactful experience added immense value to my journey at the 2024 NASPA Annual Conference. Engaging with inspiring leaders, including Deans of Students, Assistant Vice Presidents, and Vice Presidents of Student Affairs from across the nation, who shared being an African American man with me, gave me invaluable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing Black and African American men in higher education. The discussions centered on crucial topics such as diversity, equity, inclusion, and community building, highlighting the importance of representation and empowerment in student affairs. This pre-conference broadened my perspectives and reinforced my commitment to advocating for social justice in all aspects of my work. It was a privilege to be part of such meaningful conversations and learn from fellow attendees' experiences and expertise.

Furthermore, the fellowship aided me in presenting alongside my NUFP cohort mates on the importance of preparatory programs and internships for graduate student success. As I flowed through various sections, I was humbled by the attendees who came to me to tell me how much they appreciated our presentation. The fellowship supported my participation in this presentation and allowed me to engage with a diverse audience and receive valuable feedback.

In conclusion, receiving the Jim Rhatigan Fellowship has been a tremendous honor and privilege. It has enriched my conference experience and empowered me to contribute meaningfully to the conversations and initiatives shaping the future of student affairs. As I reflect on mytime at the conference, I am grateful for the support and opportunities provided by the fellowship. The knowledge gained, connections made, and experiences shared have been invaluable. I look forward to applying these insights to my work as I strive for excellence in student affairs.
