Additional Information

Many young people are unaware of the serious risks drugs and alcohol pose to their health, to their success in school, and to their future. According to 2018 data from NIDA’s Monitoring the Future survey, daily marijuana use among full-time college students is at a 35-year high. While alcohol consumption is declining, alcohol remains college students’ substance of choice. Social norms encourage and normalize drinking on campus. The latest data and an applied understanding of student perspectives and needs must be leveraged to effectively inform this generation of young people about drug and alcohol misuse.

How can we shatter myths and address misconceptions to prevent young people from misusing drugs and alcohol? College and university staff and students can work together on educational events that provide students with the science-based facts about drugs and alcohol to help them make informed decisions. NIDA’s National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week® (NDAFW) is a national health observance, coordinated by NIDA and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, designed to equip educational institutions, like yours, with the materials and tools you need to SHATTER THE MYTHS® about drugs and alcohol and elevate the science of addiction. Now in its 10th year, NDAFW will be held March 30—April 5, 2020.
