The Terminal Degree & Is It for Me?

NASPA's African American Knowledge Community (AAKC) is hosting a conversation on what questions individuals should be asking prior to applying to a PhD/EdD program. Our panelists consist of Black faculty and/administrators in doctoral programs across that country that have a focus in Higher Education/Student Affairs Administration. The general purpose of the panel is to engage in a conversation around the selection process, timing, and the intentional planning (in both career & life) that goes into selecting a graduate program. 

While our target audience are the members of the AAKC, the content that will be provided is invaluable to anyone who engages. It is critical that African American, Black, and other historically marginalized professionals are highlighted as leaders and mentors within the profession; this is one opportunity for this to occur. The AAKC's live briefing engages with several items within NASPA's strategic plan by:

• Fostering and promoting volunteer engagement that enhances effective professional practice and pathways to leadership.
• Opening pathways throughout the Association and the student affairs profession for equity-seeking, historically minoritized, and marginalized communities.
• Investing in and promoting a scholar-practitioner identity and mindset within the student affairs profession.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

• understand the level of time commitment needed to dedicate to a terminal degree program;
• be able to ask the appropriate questions to determine if a full-time or part-time program is best suited for their educational, career, and personal needs; and
• be equipped to determine which degree, PhD or EdD, is the appropriate route for them.
