2020 Was a Hot Mess: Lessons Learned and Strategies for a Tidier 2021
Virtual Engagement Events Supporting the Profession AVP or "Number Two" Senior Level VP for Student Affairs
January 19, 2021 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. EST
2020 has been a year like no other. During it, campus leaders have faced seemingly countless and interconnected challenges – a global pandemic, demands for racial justice, unparalleled societal upheaval, a presidential impeachment and a contested election, and more – that have required institutional responses under pressure cooker conditions. Sometimes, we’ve gotten it (mostly) right, and we’ve moved with bolstered confidence to the next crisis of the day. At other times, well, we’ve learned some things that have informed the next round of crisis response.
The cascading crises of 2020 have sparked or accelerated innovation and change in student affairs and higher education more broadly. Vice presidents for student affairs have had to become “armchair epidemiologists” in order to create safe living and learning conditions and operational practices for students and other community members during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. They’ve had to compassionately, thoughtfully, and strategically respond to student demands for institutional change in the context of national cries for racial justice, knowing that the demanded changes come with budget implications in a context of diminishing resources.
During this live briefing moderated by NASPA President Kevin Kruger, you’ll hear from several student affairs leaders about the lessons they learned during 2020 that they can apply moving forward, fully expecting, nay knowing, that more monumental challenges await in the new year.
