Visualizing Systematic Discrimination: Mapping Disaggregated Data
Virtual Live Briefings Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice Assessment, Evaluation, and Research
September 22, 2021 2:00 pm (ET)
What does systemic racism look like? It is often challenging to visualize, and that makes it very difficult to find and dismantle. This session will demonstrate how an innovative tool makes inequitable systems easier to see and showcase efforts to successfully advocate for reforms to systems that have long perpetuated inequity. The session will contextualize this tool by overviewing the student judicial process and reviewing how inequities in the student adjudication process sustain systemic discrimination.

About
If asked to visualize racism, you would likely conjure the image of a specific person or historic event. Systemic racism, however, stems from flaws in systems, not people, and it often exists without any malice or ill intent from the individuals who are part of those systems. This makes it harder to visualize, and therefore, harder to understand. This fact plagues postsecondary leaders committed to equitable student outcomes. If it is hard to see systemic racism, how do we find and dismantle it?
This session will show attendees how disaggregated data can be used in powerful and innovative ways to visualize systems, identify their flaws, and advance policies that address the higher education structures that perpetuate inequity. The session will demonstrate a data visualization approach, developed by Student-Ready Strategies, to visualize student progression data in a way that will clearly show where inequities occur in college access and attainment.
The session will include an example overview of data from the student adjudication process to show how systemic discrimination in a seemingly equitable process perpetuates different results for underserved populations. The presenters will guide participants through an activity in which they have the opportunity to interact with a student progression and equity map and think about ways to turn the information into action.
