Award honors Director, Doctor of Educational Leadership Program John L. Hoffman

WASHINGTON, D.C. —The NASPA Foundation is pleased to recognize outstanding members of the student affairs and higher education community through the Pillars of the Profession. John Hoffman, Director, Doctor of Educational Leadership Program in higher education at the California State University, Fullerton, has been named a 2017 Pillar of the Profession.

NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education is the leading association for student affairs professionals.

“No matter where he was teaching, John was seen as a hard-working, passionate, firm, yet fair faculty member,” says Henry Gee, Vice President, Student Services, Rio Hondo College. “I can confidently state that students who have worked with John Hoffman have flourished in the classroom and more importantly, in their careers.”

Dr. John L. Hoffman is an associate professor of educational leadership at California State University, Fullerton where he also serves as the director of the doctor of educational leadership program and the chair of the Department of Educational Leadership. John has been a member of NASPA for over 20 years. His involvement includes participation in a variety of committees; leadership roles for graduate student, new professional, mid-level professional, and research institutes; service as a member of the 2009 and 2012 Western Regional Conference planning committees; and service on the Region VI Advisory Board. He was a member of the 2014-2015 ACPA-NASPA Joint Task Force to Review Professional Competency Areas for Student Affairs Educators.

“He maintains the highest standards of achievement while simultaneously exuding kindness as the students face the greatest academic challenges of their lives,” says Lori M. Ideta, Interim Vice Chancellor for Students. “Dr. Hoffman volunteers a lot of his time and life energy into improving his community. Dr. Hoffman has dedicated his life to NASPA.”

The Pillars award is designed to honor individuals who have served as teachers, leaders, and scholars in the field who:

• Sustained professional distinction in the higher education field, as defined by donors and supporters;

• Served in leadership roles in NASPA, either regionally or nationally;

• Are recognized or remembered by colleagues, friends, students, or student organizations for extraordinary service; and

• Have made significant lifetime contributions to the higher education field.

The class of Pillars will be honored at the 2017 NASPA Annual Conference in San Antonio, TX. As part of the Pillars program, the NASPA Foundation accepts gifts in the name of each honoree. These gifts come back to the student affairs profession as scholarships, research grants and awards.
