California State University, San Bernardino named 2017 Pillar of the Profession

Award honors Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Brian Haynes

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The NASPA Foundation is pleased to recognize outstanding members
of the student affairs and higher education community through the Pillars of the Profession.

Dr. Brian Haynes, vice president for Student Affairs, California State University,
San Bernardino, has been named a 2017 Pillar of the Profession. NASPA – Student Affairs
Administrators in Higher Education is the leading association for student affairs professionals.

“I have also been impressed with (but not surprised by) Brian’s commitment to creating a
strong sense of community support for CSUSB,” said Peg Blake, vice president for Enrollment
Management/Student Affairs, Humboldt State University. “Brian works hard to ensure that all
students, regardless of where they grow up or what resources they lack, will have an outstanding
educational experience.”

Dr. Haynes serves as the vice president for Student Affairs at California State University,
San Bernardino. In his position, Dr. Haynes oversees enrollment services, student services,
intercollegiate athletics, student life and the dean of students. With Dr. Haynes’ leadership,
CSUSB was awarded a $14.5 million GEAR UP grant that connects the K-12 schools in the San
Bernardino and Riverside counties to mentoring, tutoring and formal partnerships with CSUSB
to encourage student and family pre-college preparation for college success. In addition, Dr.
Haynes has provided leadership to expand student success facilities, including housing, dining
and the student union.

The Pillars award is designed to honor individuals who have served as teachers, leaders
and scholars in the field who sustained professional distinction in the higher education field, as
defined by donors and supporters; served in leadership roles in NASPA, either regionally or
nationally; are recognized or remembered by colleagues, friends, students or student
organizations for extraordinary service and have made significant lifetime contributions to the
higher education field.

The class of Pillars will be honored at the 2017 NASPA Annual Conference in San
Antonio, Texas. As part of the Pillars program, the NASPA Foundation accepts gifts in the name
of each honoree. These gifts come back to the student affairs profession as scholarships, research
grants and awards.
