The Promise of AI in Student Affairs

The Transformative Potential of AI in Student Affairs: Recommendations for Student Affairs Leaders

Supporting the Profession
December 4, 2024

In the Summer of 2022 NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education published the The Compass Report, which names a set of imperatives for the future of student affairs, including Imperative 3: Optimize use of technologies to deliver high-quality in-person and virtual student experiences. At that time, only 20% of survey respondents indicated that they were either aware of and planning a response to or very responsive to the topic of AI and augmented reality.

Within two short years, interest in the use of AI in student affairs has grown exponentially alongside broad access to tools powered by the new technologies. NASPA's 2024 Top Issues in Student Affairs survey found that 45% of respondents ranked “Leveraging artificial intelligence to advance student learning and engagement” as a very important issue to their institutions. Several respondents also shared that they are working to address this issue by forming AI committees, considering how AI relates to pedagogy and academic integrity, and preparing students to interface with AI.

As part of a broader research and policy agenda related to the use of artificial intelligence and its impact on the field of student affairs, NASPA is excited to share The Transformative Potential of AI in Student Affairs: Recommendations for Student Affairs Leaders.

This short-form report has been developed by Dr. Claire Brady of Glass Half Full Consulting with support from Strada Education Foundation as an actionable guide to provide practitioners with information about the current state and future directions of AI in student affairs.

The Transformative Power of AI

AI Adoption Chart

As higher education evolves in the era of the fourth industrial revolution, AI presents unparalleled opportunities to enhance how institutions support and engage students. From adaptive learning platforms to predictive analytics, AI enables personalization, operational efficiency, and proactive interventions.

At its core, the report underscores that AI should augment—not replace—human connections. By automating routine tasks, AI empowers professionals to focus on relationship-building activities that drive student success.

This report offers a four-phase approach to AI adoption, including 14 use cases from colleges and universities engaging in innovative technology projects along each phase.

Based on Complete College America’s (2023) “Do Now, Do Soon, and Work Toward” model for AI integration to affect college completion efforts, this framework expands and adapts this concept to address four unique challenges and opportunities within student affairs. The framework retains the spirit of Complete College America’s phased approach while addressing the specific needs of student affairs leaders at this critical juncture in higher education.

1
RAPID IMPLEMENTATION

Implement readily available AI solutions that address current student affairs challenges with minimal disruption to existing processes and build momentum for further AI adoption.

2

SCALING SOLUTIONS

Expand proven AI solutions and plan for their broader assimilation into various student affairs domains.

4
STRATEGIC TRANSFORMATION

Craft an expansive vision for AI-enhanced student affairs that transcends current limitations and aligns with broader institutional long-range goals.

The report also includes sections on:

Ethical and Human-Centered AI Practices

  • Hyper-personalized learning pathways
  • Advanced predictive interventions
  • Integrated ecosystems supporting academic, social, and career success

Leveraging AI to Empower Students

The report calls on Student Affairs leaders to embrace bold, innovative solutions while safeguarding the human element that defines higher education.
