Providing the same level of Title IX-related education and services to international students as we do for domestic students presents unique challenges. International students enter our institutions having had diverse experiences with U.S. culture, higher education, laws and policies, and dating and sex generally. International students’ fluency in English and understanding of the technical language involved in Title IX policies and processes varies. Participation in an investigation process, as complainant, respondent or witness, may cause particular fear for international students, who may be uncertain as to how these events could affect their nonimmigrant status. In addition, home country communities within the U.S. and abroad may be influential in international students’ actions regarding Title IX matters.
This session broadly aims to discuss barriers for international students to accessing and participating in Title IX programs. Presenters will share case examples from their experiences working with international students on multiple campuses and offer ideas for increasing international student access to and participation in Title IX programs and services. Presenters will also offer examples of resource materials specifically designed for international students and staff working with international student services offices.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will be able to:
- name a minimum of two potential barriers to international student access to and participation in Title IX programs and services on their campuses;
- describe at least two actions their campuses could take to increase international student access to and participation in Title IX programs and services; and
- identify at least two ways in which Title IX and International Student Services staff (and other campus partners) can collaborate to improve communication of Title IX policies, procedures, and support services to international students.
